Author Interview: CALLING THE REAPER by Jason Pere @Goddessfish

fs_callingthereaper_banner-copy

Can you describe your dream home?

Something secluded off in a wilderness refuge. It would have all the means to be self-sufficient and afford the inhabitants a lavish and comfortable life while also having the ability to quickly reach civilization when the loneliness gets too great for comfort.

If we were to come to your house for a meal, what would you give us to eat?

I probably wouldn’t give you anything to eat but I would make sure that you had a beverage of your choice.  My darling wife on the other hand would likely proceed to cook you a scrumptious and hearty southern meal.  Her motto is “If you love it, feed it.”

Tell us about the absolute BEST fan letter you have received.

I have only ever received on piece of “fan mail”. I have to say that I was pretty thrilled to receive that letter. I think that the highest complement that I have received on my writing came from my editor and writing buddy, Kathrin Hutson. She told me that “My work has officially made her experience a wider range of emotions than any other author, ever.”

Say your publisher has offered to fly you anywhere in the world to do research on an upcoming book, where would you most likely want to go?

Tough question because as a fantasy writer I generally do precious little research and just wing it from my imagination. I do like to feature characters of Knightly quality in much of my work so in that respect I would like the chance to go to jolly old England one day.

Who designed the book cover for the book you are touring?

I have had two cover designs. The first was done by a long time artist friend of mine, Christy Jackson Nicholas. The current version of the cover was designed by the incredibly gifted author/illustrator Sarah Cushaway.

mediakit_bookcover_callingthereaperThe time of the Unity has ended. Now, the realm of man is stranded between Paradise and Purgatory. The Valkyrie and Reaper battle over the fate of all who pass from the land of the living and into the afterlife.

Eight mortal spirits from vastly different worlds tread the same, inevitable path toward their last, crucial decision. Within them all exists the defining conflict every man must face—to look upon the end of their life with glory and honor, or to give credence to their baser longings, calling the Reaper to their own demise.

In this rich, harrowing tale of pride, deceit, honor, vengeance, and redemption, each individual must battle their inner turmoil, facing the sacrifices they have made before their unavoidable end in the land of the living.

But their last day in life is also their first day of death amidst the terrors of the underworld. Lord Master Death wants them all…and the real battle has only just begun.

Excerpt:

Aristo reached far within and blocked all the pain shooting through his being. I am Praetorian, my flesh does my bidding. Again, he commanded his eyes to open. When he finally managed to force them open, the agony consuming his head must have felt very much like staring straight into the blazes of the sun. He felt the tearing of skin as his world instantly turned from the darkest black to a moment of brightest white. His eyes watered heavily and he blinked, trying to clear away at least some of the dried blood which had sealed his eyes shut. For several moments, everything was a blur, but then he could distinguish colors and shapes again.

He nearly wished that he had in fact been blinded; he would have at least been spared the image before him. Aristo had been wounded in battle before, but never like this. His body lay covered in a blanket of dried crimson. No one would have known that he bore the deep purple uniform of the Praetorian Legion had they even bothered to look at him. It was confounding that he had bled so profusely and could still draw breath, still feel the beat of his heart within his chest. A moment of warrior’s pride overtook him when he studied his twisted form and realized the excruciating pain was not unwarranted. Then he remembered.

Captured, he thought. I’ve been captured.

But even as the thought passed through her mind, a hand clamped across her mouth and she was pulled against a hard, muscular figure.

She tasted cloth. Her heart beat a wild tattoo. Her body stiffened, paralysed not only by fear but an almost ludicrous disbelief as she allowed her valise to slip from her hand.

Dramatic events never happened to her. Ever.

‘If I remove my hand, do you promise not to scream?’ The voice was male. Warm breath touched her ear.

Sarah nodded. The man loosened his hold. She turned.

Here are a couple of sneak peeks!

ETERNAL NIGHT, by Jade Kerrion

51sv9p4dqvlAshra’s hand trailed across Jaden’s muscled torso. He made it easy for her to be gentle. His body trembled as if he longed for her. His mouth was hungry for her kiss. He arched up against her, as if craving more. His need was like a living creature, wild and aching for her touch.

Eyes closed, Ashra shivered. Only one other person had desired her as much.

And he was dead.

She forced her way through the memories of pale bodies tangled upon cool silk sheets. When her soul-sucking power leeched out, it found no opposition. Images of the human’s life rewound in a blaze of vivid sights, sounds, and sensations.

Ashra looked up at Tera, her smile little more than a barely perceptible curve of her lips. “He fancies himself the protector of the child of prophecy. Was she among those taken tonight?”

Tera nodded.

Ashra chuckled, the sound without humor. “It’s a pity her genetic heritage wasn’t sufficiently superior to prevent her from being culled.”

“There’s more. Go deep.”

She pushed past the blackness at the start of his memories, expecting deeper darkness. Instead, the colors shifted into shades of ochre and gray. Memories, older than his body, resided in his soul; memories of an Earth long since lost to them—a planet surrounded and nourished by water; images of tall buildings glistening beneath a benevolent sun, and of thriving cities filled with the bustle of humans; memories of quiet and intimate conversations beneath a silver moon, the same silver moon that now graced Malum Turris with its light, though a thousand years older and viewed only from beneath the protection of the dome.

She saw herself as he must have seen her, a much-younger icrathari, still hopeful for the future, never realizing that the Earth they had all known and loved was irretrievably lost. Had she ever looked that vulnerable? Had her smile ever been so beautiful, so filled with love as she looked upon—

“Rohkeus?” Oh, blessed Creator, was that stricken whisper her voice?

Ashra pulled back and stared at the human. Her mouth dropped open. Her heart pounded in her chest, its beat erratic. It couldn’t be. It simply couldn’t be—

She looked up at Tera. The other icrathari nodded.

Rohkeus’s soul reborn…in a human.

Ashra threw her head back and laughed, a despairing sound. Her prince, her love, reduced to a human? Her slender fingers coiled into fists. Her golden eyes glittering, she pushed away from him, though her body trembled from the loss of his warmth. No, the human was not Rohkeus; he could never be Rohkeus.

Steeling herself against the gasp of pain that escaped from his lips as the anesthetizing effect of her kiss faded, Ashra rose to her feet with sinuous grace. “He is not one of us. Not anymore.” Nothing had been more devastating than losing Rohkeus to a human assassin. To see his soul reborn in that contemptible and weak race was an insult to the person Rohkeus had been.

“Should we turn him into a vampire?” Tera asked.

“Kill him. Set Rohkeus’s soul free.”

A Cross to Bear: A Gabriella Cross Paranormal Romance Book 1

51awjmbzlelAll around her, the sounds of baying wolves echoed in the night. Trees slapped her face as she ran, and she tripped more than once. She was crying now and mumbling to herself, terrified. She dared not look back, knowing that the wolves were pursuing her. She came out of the woods into a clearing leading to a tall hill. The howls came from all directions. Shadows flew through the woods in her peripheral vision, and Gabby cried out. She fell again, skinning her knee badly on a jagged rock. In her terrified state, she felt no pain, but continued as fast as she could and ran up the hill.

A snarl came from directly behind her, and she instinctively turned and cried out. A wolf was bearing down on her fast. She turned and raised a hand as the beast leapt at her with gleaming claws leading the way.

“NO!” Gabby cried.

To her amazement, the wolf changed form in mid-flight and turned into a naked man. He landed at her feet on all fours and snarled at her.

“Get away from me!” she screamed.

The naked man backed away from her warily, glancing down at his human hands with a look of confusion and shock. More wolves were coming out of the woods. They stopped when they saw the one who had turned into a human in the light of the full moon.

Gabby wasted no time considering her luck and ran as fast as she could up the hill.

“Gabriella Cross, stop!” Michael’s voice rose up over the howls.

Gabby could hardly see through her tears. She didn’t dare look back, knowing that she would find death closing in on her. She reached the top of the hill and ran across the flat expanse of rocky earth.

“Gabriella!” came the voice again.

The wolves were gaining on her.

She darted between two pines blocking her way, receiving many scrapes on her face and arms. Half blinded by tears and slapping branches, she stumbled out from between the trees and suddenly came to a steep cliff. She tried to stop, but her momentum was too great. With a terrified cry she fell forward over the cliff.

She frantically thrashed her arms as she fell to her death. Above, on the ledge, a mournful wolf cried out. The ground was coming up fast to crush her, and Gabby closed her eyes, not wanting to see her death.

Then. Suddenly. Gabriella was weightless.

Strong arms held her firmly. She opened her eyes to find a winged beast staring back at her.

Gabby passed out.

Mail Order Angel by Mandy Colton #Romance @Goddessfish

mbb_tourbanner_mailorderangel

GENRE: Contemporary Romance

Fun characters, humor, drama, and heartwarming moments…

mediakit_bookcover_mailorderangelHeartbreaking loss strikes two people living happy and carefree lives in polar opposite places of the North American map. Young and adventurous, Lance Colburn left home years ago and worked his way north to Alaska, eventually settling in Nome. After building a successful business, he’s still a very content bachelor, living in a brand new home he constructed himself. Life couldn’t get much better…until the worst news a single guy could get finds him after a family member is stricken with a fatal illness. He learns that his simple—and slightly selfish—existence is about to get flipped upside down and crowded. Worst of all, he’s going to need a specific kind of help that can’t be found in Nome.

Having lived a happy and sheltered life with her parents in Boston, Massachusetts, Angel McBride is about to become an adult and spread her wings. While taking a summer vacation in Europe with her friends before starting college, tragedy strikes at home. After returning, she is shocked to find that her life has already drastically changed and is about to get worse. She needs an escape plan—and quickly.

With little time and no other choices at hand, both Lance and Angel come up with the same ridiculous idea at the same time: Marriage to a stranger.

But neither are prepared or quite mature enough to handle the big leap. Can they overcome her deception and his wily ways to find true happiness?

Excerpt:

The next morning, Lance knocked on Anna’s bedroom door and walked in. Out of the closet, he pulled the pretty off-white dress and heels that he’d picked for her and told her to get ready. When she’d dressed and walked into the living room and saw him wearing a suit, she knew immediately where they were going. Today was her fake wedding day. His eyes slowly moved over her, becoming a shade darker, his lids heavier. No words were needed to describe what she saw there on his handsome face. She’d dated enough boys and read enough smarmy romance novels to know that what she was seeing in his eyes was desire. Well, she could ditto that look. Sweet baby Jesus, did he make a suit look good.

He smiled and stuck his hand out for her to take. Guess they really were doing this. Okay. It wouldn’t be real. It would not be real. Angel placed her hand in his big warm one and it felt sooo good, it set her whole arm to tingling. Then out the door they went. To get fake married, Angel. Don’t slobber and stop mooning over the guy.

There was only the two of them and two witnesses present at the ceremony. It was a couple who were obviously friends of Lance’s. He’d muttered their names to her, and the Justice of the Peace went right to it. He spoke some words, told her and Lance what to repeat, she sputtered over her lines on purpose, and it was quickly over. Lance slipped a plain, cold gold band on her finger and pecked her on the cheek. He shook hands with the Justice guy and his friend. Some legal papers were signed by all parties, and that was that. Married. Not too awkward or terribly painful.

As soon as Angel had that last thought, out of the corner of her eye, she saw the woman with Lance’s friend moving closer toward her. The woman opened her mouth to speak, and Angel was about to shake her head, to let her know that she couldn’t speak the language, when the woman let go a string of words that shocked her when they hit her ears. Flat left her dumbstruck and, seconds later, feeling nauseous. It wasn’t what she’d said; it was the fact that Angel had no frigging idea what she’d said. She was pretty sure the words were in Russian.

Aww, come on! Of all the bum luck. She seemed to be loaded with it now.

This just couldn’t be happening. A surge of bile started rushing straight up the pipeline, and she grabbed her stomach and pitched forward. The other woman grabbed her hand and pulled her along fast down a nearby hallway and pushed her through a door. Ah…a restroom. Goody. Sometimes you didn’t need words. Everybody understands the look of an urp coming. Angel barely had time to raise the toilet lid before she was throwing up. Not much came up, because thankfully, they hadn’t eaten breakfast yet.

Angel rinsed her mouth out with water and looked in the mirror. What was she going to do now? She just stood there, rattled and shaking, until there was a knock.

When she cracked the door open, Lance was standing there looking concerned. “Anna? You okay?”

No. Definitely not. She shook her head.

He said, “Oh. We were all going to have lunch, but we can go home instead.”

She nodded. “Yes. Home. Please,” she stuttered, begging with her eyes.

Behind him, the man and woman stood, and the woman placed her hand on Lance’s arm, as if to get his attention. Angel felt another wave coming and shut the door in Lance’s face, locking it. She heaved again. Poor Lance was rapping on the door and calling to her, sounding really concerned, and then she heard the other man’s voice whispering.

“You need to take her to the doctor, friend. Right now. These women arrive in all kinds of states. They can be sick, pregnant, have venereal diseases—even AIDS. Sorry to bust your bubble, but it’s been known to happen.”

Angel heard what sounded like a growly hiss. “You could have fucking told me this before I married her, Raymond!”

“Sorry pal. She sounds real sick in there, and I’m just sayin’…”

“Yeah? Well, thanks for nothin’. Pal!”

Oh. How. Embarrassing.

The rapping on the door became more insistent. When she opened it this time, Lance reached around, snatched her hand, and pulled her out, practically dragging her down the hallway. He put her in his truck and buckled her in, jumped in, and spun out of the parking lot like a mad man on a mission. He pulled out his phone. “Doc, need to see you right away.”

She heard a man’s voice say something on the other end, and Lance erupted. “Tell Earl to sleep it off somewhere else. This is an emergency, goddammit!”

Mandy Colton is from Louisville, KY, and lives a very quiet life with her husband and teenage son. A fan of romance, fun adventure, drama, humor, and on occasion, sci-fi stories. Her first book, Way to Go, and the continuing series came from her years, own adventures and experiences working in the travel industry.

Although she’s a great fan of the human imagination, she is also of the opinion that there are just no better stories than those that involve a bit of true life.

Prism by Matthew D. Ryan @Goddessfish #Fantasy @MatthewDRyan1

mbb_tourbanner_prism

GENRE: Fantasy

mediakit_bookcover_prismIn the mystical realm of the Cavern, Akarra is Shardshaper to the quartzian people who inhabit it. Fashioned from quartz and filled with enchanted light, the quartzians are a strong and hearty people. Akarra is no exception. But when destiny intervenes, she must choose between the he-quartz she loves and the life path she lives for. Which shall she choose?

Excerpt:

Yridia produced another crystal: a clump of cracked, twisted quartz. She placed it in front of Akarra and said, “I want you to shape this crystal into an icosahedron. Work quickly. Now, go.”

Akarra blanched: An icosahedron was the most complicated perfect solid known. It was a quasi-spherical shape consisting of twenty identical triangular sides. A correctly formed icosahedron would fit in a perfect sphere in such a way that every vertex of every triangle would just touch the inner surface of the sphere. Actually, that was true of all perfect solids.

Akarra lifted the Shard and pointed the flat face of one of its triangular faces towards the clump of crystal. She bowed her head in concentration, summoning the power of her will. Her mind reached into the Shard; she could sense the Bond it had made with Yridia. The Bond inhibited Akarra’s control of the Heartshard, but not entirely: she could still harness the power of the Shard, just at a less effective level. She did so, and the Shard began to glow in her hands. First it glowed red, pulsing with energy, temperature rising. Next, orange, and the temperature began to drop. Next, yellow and a flash of cold. The other colors followed in turn: green, blue, indigo, violet, and then finally, it went clear. She sensed the presence of deathlight, and saw it in her mind’s eye although her normal vision failed her. She discharged a thick beam of deathlight focused on the lump of crystal. Immediately, the crystal began to morph and ripple.

Angel Boy by Annalisa Russo #Historical #Romance

mbb_tourbanner_angelboy

GENRE: Historical Romance (20th Century)

perf5.000x8.000.inddPrivate Investigator Meg Cavelli wonders why her traitorous family has trotted out the fatted calf for Seth Truitt, the boy who left her flat eight years ago. Now he’s back, sexier than she remembers, and needs her help. How can Meg accept Seth’s no-strings-attached deal in return for bringing a deranged predator to justice, when their steamy attraction to each other might very well get in the way?

Army Air Corps pilot Seth Truitt needs help to erase his dark-stained past, but soon realizes helping Meg Cavelli solve a dogged criminal case in return for salvaging his military career might be more dangerous than flying P-26 fighters for USAAC. But since Seth has no intention of letting Meg go again, he’ll stop at nothing to keep her safe from the twisted, unnatural threat they dubbed “the monster” as kids.

As the mystery unfolds, joining their minds and hearts might be the only way to stay alive.

Excerpt:

Seth Truitt stood on the street in front of the only home he remembered. The autumnal drizzle of mid-October wet his thick mop of brown hair and plastered the starched shirt of his uniform against his skin. He turned back, grabbed his leather flight jacket and small duffel bag off the back seat, and paid the Yellow Cab hackie.

As the cab sped away he let the sight of Bellaluna sink in, soothe.

Bellaluna, beautiful moon in Italian, the ancestral home of the Cavelli family—people who took him in—raised him really—a place for family, for love, and now for sanctuary, he thought.

His Army Air Corps-issued boots crunched gravel underfoot on the long walk to the back yard. The overspent blooms of summer stretched proudly upward from terra cotta pots set on the flagstone portico. Faith’s attempt at a green thumb—his sister, Doctor Faith Cavelli now, and only living blood relative.

Two automobiles were parked out front. One vehicle he hadn’t recognized—a snazzy, brand-new Buick Coupe in hot red. Maybe from Gabriel Cavelli’s auto and motorbike collection. Gabe…one of his titulary uncles.

The three Cavelli brothers: Michael, Raphael, and Gabriel, named after the archangels by their overly optimistic mother; Michael, proverbial head of the family, shrewd, astute businessman; Raphael, globe-trotting archaeologist, now curator of the Field Museum; and Gabriel, confrontational, Harley-riding badass, self-made entrepreneur.

He wasn’t related to any of them by blood… but he was by heart, by love.

About John Patrick Kennedy

51lzgr6mnxl-_ux250_John Patrick Kennedy has been writing stories ever since he could write. At first, his imagination was his escape from a difficult childhood, where he never seemed to “fit in.” Other kids taunted him for being different and John began to create worlds in his stories where he could feel safe and secure; stronger and more confident.

When John grew older, he discovered a taste for wanderlust and adventure. As a young man, he travelled the world with little but what he could carry on his back. He has climbed Denali, hiked the Amazon, and even spent a year in Japan, teaching English and feeding deer in the famous Nara Park. His love of Asian history and philosophy has led him to become a master at Jeet Kune Do and a practicing Taoist.

John now divides his time between two homes, one in New York City, the other in London. He is married with a beautiful little girl who inspires and captivates him. They share their homes with a loyal, loving, German Shepherd. A man of many interests and talents, John has been a world-ranked tennis pro, a ballroom dancer, chef… and of course, he remains, and always will be a writer. All of John’s many interests and adventures have inspired his writing. In addition, his imagination is so vivid and dear, it is almost as if he lives part-time within a third home in his mind, an inner world his readers glimpse when they read his novels.

John writes on a Macbook Pro and finds himself hardly able to go a day without creating something, be it an idea in infancy, or one of the many novels he has going at any time. He is prolific and some friends say, even manic in the pursuit and perfection of his craft. He loves to rip wide open his readers’ minds, showing them something—a world, a character—they have never read or experienced before.

He also enjoys feedback, and anyone can feel free to contact him via twitter: twitter.com/JohnPatKennedy, or Facebook: facebook.com/AuthorJohnPatrickKennedy.
